Transformable Lamp

An embodiment design and prototyping exercise using CAD tools

Transformable lamp: Text

As a part of the coursework ¨Computer Aided Product Design¨, during my Master of Design, I was required to select an existing concept design, create the embodiment design and prototype the design using CAD tools. I selected a concept of a lamp and included the feature of shape transformation to add to the aesthetic appeal of the product.

Concept selection

By gathering concept design of transforming structures, one design was chosen to be prototyped.

Embodiment design

From the selected concept design, individual parts were designed by selecting appropriate materials and manufacturing methods. The parts were designed by using CAD tools such as Sketchup and Solidworks

Rendered with materials

The design has been rendered in Keyshot by applying materials

Low-Fi Prototype

A low fidelity prototype was created to test the mechanism

Manufacturing

From the part files in CAD, technical drawings were created for manufacturing them.

High-Fi Prototype

The manufactured parts were assembled together and the design was evaluated from the High Fidelity Prototype. Design flaws have been noted for iterative improvement.
